We have been working hard over the summer and fall on two fronts. We have collated the ideas and feelings shared by Iqalummiut about our current reality and our dreams for the future, and we have been turning them into two usable documents:

1) What We Feel – Sharing our stories

The What We Feel document collates the input of Iqalummiut in response to community engagement over the past year. It includes the thoughts and feelings that were shared through:

The Storytelling Activity, March 2012 – June 2012

The Community Exhibit, May 2012

The Working Groups, May 2012 – June 2012

This is the final document of the set of three, including What We Heard – our past voices and What We Have – our community assets. We are in the process of completing this document and preparing it for translation. This should come out in the New Year.

2) Early draft of the Sustainable Community Plan

We have been working on an early draft of the Sustainable Community Plan. We’re distilling all the reports, documents, meetings, ideas, and notes we have collected over the past year, and using them all to develop a draft plan. We’re determined to make this plan reflect our community’s feelings and needs. It will include actions to move us towards a better long-term future.

Into the winter

In the New Year we’re looking forward to distributing the Draft Plan to municipal staff and to Council, and also to the community.

We’re also looking forward to holding community meetings to discuss it together.

As ever, your input is welcome. Feel free to contact Robyn Campbell at r.campbell@city.iqaluit.nu.ca or 979-6363 x232 to share your ideas.

Wishing happy holidays to all!

Robyn Campbell

PS – Please note I’ll be taking a break over winter holidays from December 25, 2012 to January 3, 2013.

It’s been a busy springtime! In the past two months, over 400 Iqalummiut have participated in the community storytelling activity, the four-day Community Exhibit, and the eight Working Groups (click here for more details.) We are so pleased by the wonderful community response. Your warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine interest have been inspiring and heartening. It feels so good to work together in moving towards a better future. :)

What’s next?

This summer

Over the summer we are tying together the thoughtful input we’ve received, with the intent of circulating it in the fall as a document called What We Feel. This will be the third document in the set that includes What We Heard – A summary of past voices and What We Have – Our community assets. These three tools will form the basis of the content for our first Sustainable Community Plan. We will continue to seek advice and maintain open dialogue with stakeholders and community residents to create a meaningful sustainability plan for Iqaluit.

Early fall

To our delight Iqalummiut have requested several follow-up meetings to enhance our understanding of sustainability in our community. We are looking at booking these in the early fall, knowing that many people are away from town in the summertime.

Late fall

We’re intending to have the first draft of the Sustainable Community Plan available for community review in the late fall.

We wish you a very fine summer, with time out on the land and with your neighbours, friends and family. :)

We are pleased to report there has been a wonderful response to the first two days of Sustainable Iqaluit’s Community Exhibit. Already, over 130 Iqalummiut have responded with warmth, enthusiasm and interest in reflecting on our past and designing our future. There are two days left – come join in the fun!

The exhibit includes old photographs, locally produced videos, games and more. You can pick up resources, share your stories, learn about sustainability, reflect on the past and dream up the future. It’s an exhibit for the whole family.

During the Community Exhibit we are also providing information about Sustainable Iqaluit. This is your opportunity to learn what we’ve heard to date, share what we value as a community, and contribute what you want for the future. Also, you can sign up for our upcoming working groups, to get into the details of designing our future.

Everybody is invited to the Community Exhibit:

Community groups and individuals in Iqaluit are invited to engage in a storytelling activity, as one way of contributing to the Sustainable Community Plan. Everyone is encouraged to tell their story. This storytelling activity will run until the end of April 2012.

Four questions are offered to get the stories flowing:

Dream: What would you like our community to be in the future?

Design: What change would you like to see, to make life better for Iqalummiut?

Deliver: How will you contribute to make our community more sustainable?

There are many ways for community members to share their stories. You are invited to:

In partnership with Iqalummiut, the City of Iqaluit is beginning to develop a Sustainable Community Plan to guide the long-term future of the community.

A Sustainable Community Plan is the high-level plan impacting municipal and non-municipal services. It will describe the long-term vision of the community and outline practical steps to achieve that vision.

The Sustainable Community Plan relies on the input from the entire community. Over the past few weeks, municipal staff have undergone a municipal engagement process designed to share stories about what we have, what we want, and how can work together to make it happen.

Over the next few weeks, Sustainable Iqaluit will be inviting people in the community to engage in the same process. Stay tuned for more information. There will be opportunities to share stories, review documents, and participate in public meetings.

Iqalummiut can learn more about Sustainable Iqaluit, subscribe to updates, and become actively involved by visiting www.sustainableiqaluit.ca. Materials are available in Inuktitut, English and French.
